What Makes a Video Game a Work of Art?

The game had to be simple, since the entirety of its code was squeezed into a 24-KB package. Yet even in such limited space, creator Toru Iwatani created not only a story, but also personalities?the four ghosts exhibit different patterns for chasing the hero, for instance. Pac-Man is such an icon that it doesn't need much of a defense for qualifying as modern art. Warren's company Kill Screen is actually a reference to what happens when a player reaches the 256th level, and half the maze turns into a scrambled mess of graphics, rendering the game unplayable.
