ROMNEY PLAN TO RAIN ON OBAMA 'BOW' OVER JOBS: 'The real unemployment rate is over 15%' - D.C. spottings at the Super Bowl -- Obama campaign holds Indy funder -- Gingrich edges Ron Paul for second in

BEST SUPER BOWL AD: Chrysler?s ?It?s Halftime in America,? starring Clint Eastwood http://bit.ly/w8hVzX

--@pfeiffer44: Saving the America Auto Industry: Something Eminem and Clint Eastwood can agree on ? @twitter: In the final three minutes of the Super Bowl tonight, there were an average of 10,000 Tweets per second.

--Reuters? Bernie Woodall: ?[T]he spot ? intoned that the automaker's successful turnaround could be used as an example for the United States as it struggles with high unemployment and a slow economic growth rate. ? Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said the campaign had no involvement with the ad. ? Gualberto Ranieri, chief spokesman ? for Chrysler, declined to comment on the notion that the advertisement was a thank-you gift to the Obama administration.? http://reut.rs/vZqjCh

--AL HUNT, ?Team Obama Shows Dangerous Penchant for Hubris?: ?[T]he Obamaites are ? showing signs of cockiness. ? The White House put out a picture of a private meeting in the Oval Office on Jan. 27 that included former President George H.W. Bush and his son, Jeb, the former governor of Florida. The Bushes were in town for the annual black tie dinner the next night at the Alfalfa Club, a gathering of business and political elites. The two featured speakers, both intended to be brief and humorous, were Obama and Jeb Bush. The president spoke to good reviews. He left before Bush spoke. ? [A]ttendees said it was the first time they could recall a speaker leaving before the other side had its fun. In addition, Obama?s 87-year-old predecessor was present. Imagine the criticism ? if President George W. Bush had walked out on a dinner before Hillary Clinton spoke, with Bill Clinton in the audience.? http://bloom.bg/xAtZaZ

SMART STORY ? Financial Times p. 4, ?Romney signals double-edged attack on jobs,? by Robin Harding in Washington: ?Romney, speaking after he won the Nevada caucus on Saturday, said that even though the official unemployment rate fell to 8.3 per cent, ? ?the real unemployment rate is over 15 per cent. ? [H]e?s been trying to take a bow for 8.3 per cent unemployment. Not so fast, Mr. President. ? We welcome any good news on the jobs front, but it is thanks to the innovation of the American people in the private sector, not to you.? ? Romney?s comments are a hint of how he would campaign ? if ? the unemployment rate continues to fall: with a twofold attack that the official figures do not reflect the true scope of joblessness and that any improvement is despite, not because of, the president.?

--ROMNEY MINDMELD: This week, we'll continue to prosecute the economic message vs. Obama. As Governor Romney said in his remarks Saturday night, Obama's been trying to take a bow for 8.3% unemployment. But this is the 36th straight month with unemployment above the cut-off set by his aides in advocating for the stimulus. You'll also see us go after Santorum and Newt as needed (see earmark release on Santorum). Obviously, delegates are the name of the game. Romney has 3-to-1 lead. The next big delegate contests are Arizona and Michigan, on Feb. 28. Newt is pushing Super Tuesday, etc., as his path. He has a right to continue on as a candidate, but the walls will start closing in on him. He's expecting some wins next month, but that might be hard to pull off after suffering a string of losses. You don't win by losing.

--JON MEACHAM, on TIME.com, ?Mitt Romney?s poverty problem?: ?The remark about the poor ? is likely to stick, for it fits in the developing impression ? that Romney?s riches render him too remote for the country?s good. If Romney realizes this and responds to the fallout ? with a new emphasis on developing opportunity for the least of these, ? then perhaps some good could come of what was a dispiriting moment. ? [T]he reality is that the independent voters in the competitive states ? may not be as morally invested in alleviating poverty and restoring the hope of the American Dream as they ought to be, but they would like to think they care about the less fortunate.? http://ti.me/wCiiru

RONALD WILSON REAGAN was born 101 years ago today (hat tip: Hohmann).

MEMO TO 2016 OPERATIVES: Several alert Playbookers, reading yesterday?s item about Jeff Zeleny asking Newt Gingrich if he can ?be successful going forward if Mitt Romney is still in your head,? had flashbacks to a question an even younger Jeff Zeleny asked then-Sen. Barack Obama in South Carolina in January 2008: ?Are you allowing President Clinton to get in your head?? Obama, per Sunlen Miller?s account at the time: ?I am trying to make sure that his statements by him are answered. Don?t you think that?s important? ? C?mon, Jeff! ? C?mon, Jeff! Don?t try cheap stunts like that.? Watch the video. http://abcn.ws/weM1sp

--SPOTTED at the private Commissioner's Party on Fri. night: Frank Luntz, James Carville.

--NOT SPOTTED at the Super Bowl: Giants superfan Ken Duberstein, who partied at home with his family and his iPad: ?Been rooting for the Giants since my Dad took me to a game in old Yankee Stadium to watch Y.A.Tittle, Sam Huff, Emlen Tunnell, Andy Robustelli, Frank Gifford, Rosey Grier. It's been lots of years. And loads of good memories, even from the lean years! Wearing my Giants T-shirt, but I've retired my L.T. sweatshirt when he went bad.?

OBAMA CAMPAIGN RECEPTION IN INDY: ?PLEASE JOIN Campaign Manager JIM MESSINA ? Chicago Bears Coach LOVIE SMITH ? and REGGIE LOVE [needs no introduction] for a reception celebrating THE BIG GAME ? SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4TH, 2012 ? 7:00 in the evening ? at the home of DR. WOODROW MYERS, JR [prominent African-American physician, businessman and philanthropist] ? Guest: I would like to attend the reception at $250 per person ? Co-host: I would like to attend as a co-host at $2,500 per person.? Online invite was headlined: ?JOIN JIM MESSINA IN INDIANAPOLIS.?

RECORD NFL LOBBYING -- Dave Levinthal: ?Through hearings, legislation and caucuses, Congress in the past year has tackled numerous issues germane to the game, including player labor, concussions, gambling, drug testing, broadcasting rights and a college playoff system. ? The NFL? spent $1.62 million on federal lobbying in 2011 ? an all-time high ? College football?s Bowl Championship Series last year spent a one-year record of $350,000 ? Congress last year conducted hearings on the growing body of evidence that football players ? face heightened risk of long-term health problems from concussions sustained during play?.

?[F]ootball helmet-maker Riddell ? which had never lobbied the federal government prior to late 2010 ?[in 2011 hired] three prominent lobbying firms ? focused almost exclusively on concussion-related bills. [T]he Sports Fans Coalition, established in 2009 and led in part by aides to former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, [targeted] NFL television blackout rules, ? with the coalition arguing to the FCC that fans who help fund the construction of football stadiums ought to be able to watch games played in them.? http://bit.ly/A932sS

REAL WORLD ? ?Analysis: Israel's Iran rhetoric has Washington on edge,? by AFP?s Stephen Collinson: ?Israel may be bluffing because previous military strikes, like the suspected assault on a Syrian nuclear reactor in 2007, were not preceded by saber rattling. Israeli leaders may also not yet be ready to unleash the dire consequences of an attack, which could include reprisal missile strikes by Iran and action by allied terror groups ? But no one here can say categorically what Israel plans to do. ? A unilateral military strike by Israel would have deep strategic consequences for the United States and grave political implications for Obama. Washington would almost certainly be drawn into a new conflagration in the Middle East at a time when Obama wants to claim credit for getting troops home from Iraq. Oil prices would shoot up, crimping the US economic recovery just as it speeds up and slowing jobs growth.?

BREAKING ? ?GOP ends NV vote count,? by AP?s Cristina Silva in Las Vegas: ?Mitt Romney won handily, finishing with 50 percent. Newt Gingrich was second with 21 percent, edging out Ron Paul who had 19 percent of the vote. Rick Santorum finished last with 10 percent. The results were released early Monday, nearly two days after voters began casting their ballots. Party officials blame the delay on voting discrepancies and their old-fashioned voting method of using handwritten ballots. ? Only 32,963 voters participated in the caucuses, far short of the 44,000 Republicans who voted in the 2008 GOP caucuses.?

--@amyewalter: Biggest loser of 2012 primary cycle: Caucuses. Will nat'l parties punish them in 2016?

--EMAIL DU JOUR: ?Just saw Sheldon Adelson's 747 land at LAS. Assume its next trip is bringing Hohmann to Vegas. ?

PALACE INTRIGUE ? ?Romney splits with debate adviser,? by Jonathan Martin and Maggie Haberman: ?A GOP operative who won plaudits for bolstering Mitt Romney?s recent debate performances is not being retained, ? an apparent victim of internal tensions over staff receiving too much credit for the candidate?s comeback ? Brett O?Donnell, a former top aide to Michele Bachmann, has been paid for his work assisting Romney in the crucial Florida debates but was not offered a formal role with the campaign as he expected ? O?Donnell worked for John McCain?s 2008 campaign and was a senior aide to Bachmann up until her withdrawal ? He?s well-regarded in the Republican operative world and is not generally known as a self-promoter. ? O?Donnell?s understanding was that, following the Florida primary this past Tuesday, he would be tendered a formal offer to advise Romney on debates going forward. But GOP sources say he was abruptly informed on Wednesday that he would be paid for his work to date but would not retained in any formal capacity.? http://bit.ly/zyDbTl

NEW NAME for Ayres, McHenry & Associates, of Alexandria: ?North Star Opinion Research?: ?Whit Ayres has been the leader of our firm ? and will continue to be for many years to come ? since he and Cheryl Glenn started Ayres and Associates in Whit?s basement office in 1991. ? It was easy enough to add Jon McHenry?s name to the firm in 1998, but continuing to add surnames ? just wasn?t practical ? The contributions of Dan Judy as our third principal ? meant that it was time for a final name change.? www.northstaropinion.com

SARAH PALIN in Newsweek, on ?Life with Trig?: ?Many everyday activities like doctor?s appointments and social gatherings and travel accommodations and even mealtimes and a solid night of sleep are that much more difficult, but at the end of the day I wouldn?t trade the relative difficulties for any convenience or absence of fear. God knew what he was doing when he blessed us with Trig. We went from fear of the unknown to proudly displaying a bumper sticker sent to us that reads: ?My kid has more chromosomes than your kid!? He may not be the next Wayne Gretzky, but our hearts are filled with so much pride watching Trig giggle with his sisters? puppies, or sway to the rhythm of his Little Angels DVDs.? http://bit.ly/AChyfJ

GOP 2012, from Kevin Robillard (@PoliticoKevin):

WHAT MINNESOTANS ARE READING -- Star Tribune, ?GOP hopefuls sprint to Minn.,? by Baird Helgeson: ?Minnesota's early caucuses have thrust the state into the midst of a presidential campaign blitz not seen in years. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is to arrive Monday, as is Texas Rep. Ron Paul -- who also spent most of Saturday here. Former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania made several Minnesota appearances Sunday and will be in Rochester Monday morning to make a ?major health care speech? near the Mayo Clinic. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the victor in Saturday's Nevada caucuses, won't visit Minnesota before its caucuses, relying on former Gov. Tim Pawlenty to campaign on his behalf. ? Public Policy Polling, which works independent of the campaigns, showed Santorum with 29 percent, Romney at 27 percent, Gingrich with 22 percent and Paul trailing at 19 percent.? http://bit.ly/wnXqzi

ROMNEY: WashPost A7, ?Romney moves from question time to boarding call,? by Philip Rucker: ?Out are 55-minute town hall meetings. In are 15-minute stump speeches at buffed-up rallies. There are rope lines and hot lights, giant flags and Secret Service agents with wires in their ears. The objective: appear presidential, avoid gaffes and convince Republicans that they have no reasonable option left but to rally around Romney?s winning candidacy. ? Although Romney?s avoidance of questions from voters helps prevent him from making unforced errors, it does pose a risk that voters may see him as too cautious, calculating and detached.? http://wapo.st/AcufzI

PAUL: N.Y. Times A1, ?The Long Run: Ron Paul?s Flinty Worldview Was Forged in Early Family Life,? by David M. Halbfinger: ?Hard times, and fear of worse, were constants in Ron Paul?s boyhood home. His father and mother worked tirelessly running a small dairy, and young Ron showed the same drive ? delivering The Pittsburgh Press, mowing lawns, scooping ice cream as a soda jerk. He also embraced their politics, an instinctive conservatism that viewed Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman as villains and blamed Democrats for getting America into wars.? http://nyti.ms/zyBeYx

-- ?Paul underwhelms in Nevada,? by James Hohmann: ?While Paul won a respectable 19 percent Saturday ? 5 points higher than four years ago ? he nevertheless placed third behind Newt Gingrich, whose haphazard Nevada effort barely compared to Paul?s disciplined and well-organized operation. ? Throughout the week, Paul campaign officials said publicly that they thought they could win outright if turnout was low enough and expressed confidence they?d finish second.? http://bit.ly/wtmJPv

GINGRICH: WSJ A4, ?Gingrich Counting On ?Reagan States,?? by Danny Yadron: ?In particular, coming off two lopsided losses in Nevada and Florida, the campaign argues it can level the playing field with victories in Georgia and Tennessee, which vote on March 6, and in Texas, which votes April 3. ? [I]f the plan is mathematically possible, it is also fraught with problems, and Mr. Gingrich's disadvantages remain stark. His campaign is about $600,000 in debt and has somewhere between $1 million and $2 million in the bank, far less than the Romney campaign has.? http://on.wsj.com/zAjyYH

THE PRESIDENT?S DAY: ?At noon, the President will receive the Presidential Daily Briefing in the Oval Office. This meeting is closed press. Later, the President will meet with senior advisors.?

--THE V.P.?S DAY: ?In the morning, the Vice President will travel to Tallahassee, Florida. At 11:00 AM, the Vice President and Under Secretary of Education Martha Kanter will visit Florida State University to discuss the importance of tackling rising college costs to ensure America?s students and workers can obtain the education and training they need ? [T]he Vice President?s remarks will be streamed live to www.WhiteHouse.gov/live. At 2:45 PM, the Vice President will attend a campaign event. The Vice President will then attend a campaign event at 4:30 PM. The Vice President will return to Washington, DC, in the evening.?

MEDIAWATCH -- N.Y. Times B1, ?After a Year, Tablet Daily Is a Struggle,? by Amy Chozick: ?[W]ith 100,000 subscribers paying 99 cents a week or $39.99 a year, and 250,000 unique readers each month, The Daily is on target to break even in five years, just short of the time it typically takes a new print magazine to see a profit, said its publisher, Greg Clayman. ? The Daily ? has struggled to break into the national conversation or to drive news and build on its brand the way traditional outlets do. ? A significant number of subscribers live in Florida, Texas, Michigan, Nashville and Denver. Mr. Angelo said The Daily has always aimed at these readers, rather than catering to the chattering classes in New York and Los Angeles. ?I don?t care about what people in a 20-block radius of our office say about this product,? Mr. Angelo said.? http://nyti.ms/ycaoux
