BETHESDA, Md. (AP) ? Bo Van Pelt kept bogeys off his card and picked up an extra shot when his wedge spun back into the hole for an eagle. It's a formula that would work well at a U.S. Open, which is what Congressional felt like Thursday in the AT&T National.
On a day when the temperature was in the 90s and only seven players managed a score in the 60s, Van Pelt opened with a 4-under 67 to grab a one-shot lead over Vijay Singh, Brendon De Jonge and Jimmy Walker, who bogeyed his final hole.
Tiger Woods was never under par in the afternoon and opened with a 1-over 72.
So this is what the U.S. Open was supposed to look like.
The venerable Blue Course took a beating last year in the so-called toughest test in golf when unfavorable weather conditions in the weeks leading up to the U.S. Open and overnight rain during the championship made Congressional a pushover. Rory McIlroy had a record score of 16-under 268 for an eight-shot victory.
The AT&T National was more of a grind.
"It's certainly, I think, a little retribution for what happened last year," Woods said. "Don't be mad at me. I didn't play."
Woods missed the U.S. Open last year while recovering from injuries to his left leg. He won at Congressional in 2009 the last time the AT&T National was played here, and he won at 13-under 267. That was nothing like the course he faced Thursday.
Billy Hurley III, who went to the Naval Academy and spent five years in the service, joined Pat Perez and Jason Day at 2-under 69.
The seven players in the 60s were two less than the opening round at the U.S. Open last year. Four players failed to break 80, just like a year ago, only the 120-man field at the AT&T National is filled with PGA Tour players. For the U.S. Open, two of those rounds in the 80s were by amateurs, a third by Ty Tryon.
"I think everybody knows the golf course last year just wasn't quite ready to be set up the way they wanted it to be set up, and it's unfortunate," Van Pelt said. "I know they spent a lot of time and money to get it ready, and some things are out of your control. I said it last year ? they needed one more year, and basically you could have a U.S. Open here this week if you wanted it.
"That's the way it's set up."
The sunshine and heat figure to make it tougher over the next few days, especially on the weekend.
Nick Watney, the defending champion (at Aronimink) who was in the large group at 70, said the more fair comparison was with the U.S. Open held two weeks ago at The Olympic Club. Michael Thompson led after the opening day at 4-under 66, and Webb Simpson won at 1-over 281.
Van Pelt only twice struggled to make par, making a 30-foot putt on the 15th and a 20-footer on the par-5 sixth hole. Equally impressive was his bunker shot on the 18th to tap-in range, and he took those vibes to the first hole. After an aggressive drive, he had 93 yards to the hole and figured it was a good time to put to test all the work he has done on his wedge play. It worked out better than he imagined, holing it for an eagle.
"I actually thought it had kind of spun back in front of the hole, and all of a sudden this guy behind the green started going nuts," Van Pelt said. "You never know when those are going to happen, so it's nice to get a deuce."
Even better was not making a bogey and giving himself a good start going into his Friday morning start of the second round.
Woods never got it going, and he made two blunders late in the round with his bunker play, which also was suspect in the U.S. Open two weeks ago. After making a 15-foot birdie putt on the 14th, he put his approach into the bunker right of the green on the 15th. His shot barely got out of the sand, and he stubbed a chip, leaving him a 7-footer that he had to make for bogey.
On the next hole, he was 244 yards from the hole when he pulled a 4-iron to the bunker short of the green on the par-5 16th. The gallery groaned when the ball emerged from the bunker and barely got onto the green, costing him a reasonable birdie chance. He two-putted from 30 feet for par.
Woods attributed it to the amount of sand in the bunkers and that his 60-degree wedge "is not built for this much sand."
"So I have to make an adjustment and hit the ball a little bit closer, make sure I hit a little closer to the golf ball," he said. "And I just didn't do it."
Dustin Johnson, Hunter Mahan and Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III were at 70, along with Robert Garrigus, who tied for third last year at the U.S. Open by breaking par in all four rounds. He feigned a yawn coming out of the clubhouse Thursday. "Just another round under par here," he said.
His 70 in the opening round of the AT&T National felt more like a 67.
"I was flying irons around the hole and they were gone," he said, referring to the firmness of the greens.
It was a big day for Hurley, for so many reasons ? a Navy man at a tournament that celebrates the military, on a Congressional golf course not far from where he learned to play golf and then attended the Naval Academy.
"I think they started Plebe summer today," Hurley said, grinning.
Hurley played bogey-free until a litany of bad breaks on his last hole. His tee shot hit a tree and went even farther left, making it tough to even get back to the fairway. His third shot that he laid up short of the green settled into a divot. And his par putt from 20 feet hit a spike mark.
Even so, he was happy with the start.
"This is a heck of a golf course," Hurley said. "You have to hit a lot of quality shots, and I was able to do that. Even at this place, you hit quality shots that end up with not a good look at birdie sometimes."

If you have never had to call a pest control agency, you may not be entirely familiar with the many helpful services they can provide. Pest Control in Rochester is an important topic that everyone should have some basic familiarity with. This is because an infestation of pests can actually affect anyone. No matter how clean you keep your home or how well-maintained your property is, it is entirely possible to end up with ants, rats, mice, fleas, flies, and wasps invading your space and causing all kinds of damage. No one wants this to happen to them, so you probably already do quite a bit to prevent an infestation from taking place. However, if despite your best efforts at prevention, you still find your home becoming a home for pests as well, then you need to call a nearby pest control agency.A business providing extermination services and Pest Control in Rochester can actually do many things for their clients. They can provide initial consultations to tell you if your home or commercial property has any potential trouble spots that you should keep a close eye on. These trouble spots may be located in the basement, in crawl spaces, in the attic, or under the eaves of the roof. These spaces often have tiny holes that are barely noticeable to the untrained eye, but a pest control agent can spot these correctly as an entry point for insects and small rodents. Once inside, these pests can build nests that grow to considerable size and it doesn't take long for this to happen.
If you ever notice an unusual number of insects hanging around your property, this might be an indication that there's a problem that needs taken care of as soon as possible. You don't want to let too much time go by because some pests can reproduce at an alarming rate. Mammals such as rats and mice give birth to litters in rapid succession, though a swarm of insects can multiply exponentially in just a few days. Before you know it, there is an army of ants devouring your food in the kitchen and a swarm of wasps coming after your children! Mosquitoes too are a serious insect threat. Any standing water is a potential mosquito breeding ground. Wading pools, birdbaths, buckets, rain barrels, and other common forms of standing water might quickly turn into a serious mosquito problem.
Pest Control in Rochester is an important consideration for anyone living or working in the area. Everyone has to do their part to manage the insect and rodent population, so if you notice a problem, simply call a pest control service. They'll be happy to solve this serious problem.

There was a tie for 3rd place in the women's 100-meter sprint over the weekend. Both runners will choose between a runoff or a coin toss to determine the third team member to go to London.
By Pat Graham,?Associated Press / June 25, 2012
EnlargeAmericans Justin Gatlin and Tyson Gay could have the best chance of chasing down Usain Bolt at the London Games after showing they're rounding into top form in the 100-meter final of the U.S. Olympic?trials.

Gatlin won in 9.80 seconds Sunday and Gay was second ? 0.06 seconds behind.
"These two can really encourage each other and motivate each other to take on that other little island out there who's been dominating America," said former hurdler Renaldo Nehemiah, who represents Gatlin.
Their comebacks far from complete, Justin Gatlin and Tyson Gay are on the right path. For Gatlin, it's a journey back from a doping past, while for Gay, it's a march toward full recovery after hip surgery nearly a year ago.
With their performances, Gatlin and Gay might have put Bolt and his Jamaican teammates on notice ? or so they hope.
"I think he (Bolt) is a great talent and a great runner. I'm just glad to be back and in my top form," Gatlin said.
Gay, the American record holder, showed no ill effects of his surgically repaired right hip as he flew down the track, not a trace of a limp in his step.
He was headed to London when a year ago that very notion looked improbable.
"Bittersweet. I always like to win. I came in second," Gay said. "But at the end of the day, it was about making the team. I got to make sure I turn this little bit of a frown into a happy face. For me to start training in March and make the team is a beautiful accomplishment."
Also joining Gatlin and Gay in London will be 23-year-old Ryan Bailey, who edged Mike Rodgers, Doc Patton and Walter Dix, the Olympic bronze medalist in Beijing.
Dix pulled up in the semifinals with a left hamstring injury and wasn't the same in the final. He's hoping to be ready for the 200 this week.
"Things like this happen. I really can't say much about it," Dix said.
The last time Gatlin was at the Olympics?trials ? eight years ago ? he was a youngster about ready to become the next big thing in sprinting. He won gold at the 2004 Athens Games and a world title the following year, before his fall from grace.
He tested positive for excessive testosterone in 2006, leading to a four-year ban that prevented him from defending his title in Beijing.
Now 30, he's attempting to repair his tarnished image.
"Usually, I have a lot of words. I'm almost speechless," Gatlin said. "Everything just feels so surreal. I just let the heart really go out and do what it had to do.
"I wasn't too hyped, wasn't too calm. It felt just right and went out there and gave it my all. I have a lot more left in the tank."
As expected, LaShawn Merritt won the 400, while Sanya Richards-Ross claimed the women's race.
Noticeably missing from the 400 team was Jeremy Wariner, the silver medalist in Beijing and 2004 Olympic gold medal winner. He finished a distant sixth and won't be going to London, unless it's as a member of the relay team.
Wariner trudged off the track with his hands on his hips, refusing to stop and talk.
In other finals, Olympic silver medalist and American record holder Jenn Suhr won the pole vault.
Following the men's 100, USA Track and Field announced how the third-place tie between training partners Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh in the women's 100 will be decided.
The scenarios involve either a coin toss or a runoff to determine the third and final spot on the team for the London Games.
If both athletes choose the same option, it will determine the tiebreaker. If the athletes disagree, the tiebreaker will be a runoff. If both athletes decline a preference, the tiebreaker will be a coin toss.
The coach for both sprinters told The Associated Press they won't make any kind of decision until after they complete the 200 later this week. The final is Saturday.
Felix and Tarmoh finished in a dead heat for the last U.S. spot in the 100 to London, each leaning across the finish line in 11.068 seconds Saturday. One of them will join Carmelita Jeter and Tianna Madison, who are already on the team.

LONDON (AP) ? WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has entered the Ecuador Embassy in London seeking asylum. Some prominent cases of other asylum seekers taking shelter in embassies over the years:
CHEN GUANGCHENG: 2012
Blind dissident Chen Guangcheng escaped house arrest in his Shandong village and sought refuge at the U.S. embassy in Beijing. He left after six days, and subsequently was allowed to go to New York with his wife and two children.
MANUEL NORIEGA: 1989
Manuel Noriega, military governor of Panama, sought refuge at the Apostolic Nunciature ? the Vatican's embassy ? after being overthrown by a U.S. invasion. Noriega surrendered 10 days later after being assured he would not face the death penalty in the United States.
FANG LIZHI: 1989
Fang Lizhi, a Chinese astrophysicist and pro-democracy activist, and his wife Li Shuxian entered the U.S. Embassy in Beijing after Chinese authorities cracked down on pro-democracy protests. They lived in the embassy for 13 months before being allowed to go to the United States.
EDWARD LEE HOWARD: 1986
Edward Lee Howard, a former CIA agent, fled to Helsinki where he went to the Soviet Embassy and was granted asylum. Howard had been identified as a KGB agent by Soviet defector Vitaly Yurchenko, who later defected back to the Soviet Union as was awarded a medal.
CUBANS IN HAVANA: 1980
Six Cubans crashed a bus through the Peruvian Embassy gates in Havana on April 1, 1980. After Peru refused to turn the asylum-seekers over to the Cuban government, Fidel Castro ordered all security guards removed from the embassy. More than 10,000 Cubans then jammed the Peruvian embassy grounds demanding asylum. Castro then opened the port of Mariel and 125,000 Cubans left the country in a chaotic exodus by boats.
SVETLANA STALIN: 1966
Svetlana Stalin, daughter of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, went to the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi while she was in India returning the ashes of her husband. She returned to the Soviet Union in 1984, saying she wanted to reunite with her family. Her Soviet citizenship was restored but she left a year later to go back to the U.S. following a family feud.
CARDINAL JOZSEF MINDSZENTY: 1956
During Hungary's Communist regime, Roman Catholic Cardinal Jozsef Mindszenty lived in the U.S. Embassy in Budapest from 1956 until 1971, when he was allowed to leave for Vienna.

13.59 Meanwhile, Tim Worstall, senior fellow at the Adam Smith Institute, believes the minimum wage causes youth unemployment:
Simply put it depends upon what the minimum wage is. If it's less than 45pc or so of the average wage then the effects will be very small. Some tens of thousands of people perhaps and we'll not really notice that given that the economy as a whole creates and destroys 2m to 3m jobs a year. However, once that wage starts to get over 50pc of the average wage, then we start to see the effects. As a percentage of youth wages, what is the youth minimum wage? Answer: for 18-21-year-olds, 65pc; for 16-18 year-olds, 76pc. So, in that 18-21 year group, we?ve a minimum wage which is 65pc of the mean wage. Well into our territory where we expect to see substantial employment effects. For 16-18 year olds, the minimum wage it?s ?3.68??76pc.
Ooops!
13.54 Ambrose Evans-Pritchard has decried that Europe's crisis has nothing to do with the US:
It ignored the NO votes to the European Constitution in France and The Netherlands, ramming through the slightly-altered text as the Lisbon Treaty without referendums ? except in Ireland. When the Irish voted NO to that as well, they too were ignored.
That was the moment when the EU crossed the line altogether and lost fundamental legitimacy (at least for me). Lisbon is a rogue Treaty. Mr Barroso ? charming though he may be ? is a rogue president of a rogue Commission.
The whole construct has become authoritarian and will become autocratic if this crisis is exploited to force through fiscal union.
13.27 Marc Ostwald of Monument Securities writes that this morning's Spanish bond auction, where borrowing costs almost doubled, could highlight the need for an outright bailout:
The key point is that if Spanish Banks are demanding such a huge concession (the post auction rally highlights how harsh the concession was) at Bill (and one presumes also at Thursday's Bono) sales, Spain needs not only an ESM package to recapitalize its banks, it also needs an outright bail-out package, and it is becoming very difficult to see how it can manage without that beyond the end of Q3, unless yields fall dramatically!
As suggested in our preview: The issue is in fact about the breadth of estimates (official and market) about how much is needed to recapitalize Spain's banks (EUR 40 to 279 Bln) and as my (German) father used to say: "wer soll das bezahlen?" (who is going to pay for that?), and on the follow when will Spain be forced into requesting a full bail-out (one estimate just published suggests EUR 300 Bln would be needed), which should or would be the cue for Germany to say auf wiedersehen to the Euro.
A final point is the fact that this Spanish banking system collapse comes less than 20 years after the last one - the compare and contrast with Sweden and Scandinavia is poignant!

Ishaq Siddiqi, market strategist at ETX Capital Market:
Despite the uptick, uncertainties over the health of Spain and Italy hamper the markets? enthusiasm to build risk. Elevated Spanish bond yields - though slightly easing from previous session highs - continues to sound off alarm bells. A delay in the deadline for a group of auditors who will compile full reports on the capital needs of Spain?s toxic banking system further underpinned the rumblings in the country?s financial sector. The attention will now be on Spain?s government bond sale on Thursday.
11.49 Eurogroup chief Jean-Claude Juncker has admitted that the Greek austerity programme could be stretched over a longer period, according to Austrian state radio ORF.
11.43 ING says Spain may need a ?250bn bailout, which would be "too large" for the EFSF.
11.41 The head of Milan's Scala opera house and the world famous conductor Daniel Barenboim have taken a 10pc salary cut to help slash the company's debt.
After several years of culture budget cuts, imposed as a debt-laden Italy struggles to fend off the eurozone crisis, 11 department heads, including the choral and ballet directors, have also agreed to take the cut.
"This will not resolve the economic situation but it sends a clear message: we want to find every solution possible to support the theatre, in this moment of uncertain financial stability," Scala head Stephane Lissner said.
The opera house's debt this year is forecast to drop from ?7m to ?4.5m thanks to sponsors, savings and the rise in takings.
11.26 The EU Commission says it is not talking about any new memorandum of understanding for Greece and wants to ensure the country makes its reforms.
11.10 Quick bit of corporate news. US giant Walgreens is paying $6.7bn for a 45pc stake in Alliance Boots. Walgreens has an option to buy outright in three years, at a total cost of $16.2bn.
Meanwhile, RBS is cutting 618 branch-based financial advisers.
10.52 European shares rising now. Here's Ilya Spivak, currency strategist at DailyFX:
European shares are on the upswing after an unexpected drop in UK CPI boosted expectations that the Bank of England would offer further stimulus as well as amid reports that Greek politicians were close to forming a ruling pro-bailout coalition.
A government comprised primarily of the mainstream New Democracy and Pasok parties will then seek to ease austerity measures tied to the second EU/IMF bailout. Early bits of draft language from the G20 summit communiqu? due to emerge after the sit-down in Mexico concludes today sees European leaders pledging to ?take all necessary policy measures? to contain the crisis and avoid contagion, which is likely adding to the chipper mood on signs that international leaders are stepping up pressure on the EU to get its house in order.
Traders appear to be overlooking a sharp drop in the ZEW gauge of German investor confidence, which is not unreasonable considering anything but a slump in June as Greek election jitters gripped financial markets would have been somewhat perplexing.

Sells ?640m of 18-month bills versus ?710m at previous auction. Yield of 5.107 versus 3.302pc. Bid to cover 4.4 versus 3.2.

09.30 BREAKING NEWS...
UK inflation slows to 2.8pc in May from 3pc in April. Analysts expected 3pc. 30-month low.
Chris Adams at the FT:
Jeremy Cook, chief economist at currency brokers World First:
While oil prices were rising, news channels went bananas for a ?petrol crisis?, but there has been virtually no coverage of the 26pc fall in the price of Brent crude since March, as it has been drowned out by the on-going crisis in the eurozone.
This, alongside the continuing lack of demand due to fears over the global economy, has meant that inflation has continued to fall closer to target through the coming months.
2.8pc is the lowest level since December 2009 and will trigger a sigh of relief from Threadneedle St. as it gives the Bank of England further leeway with possible further expansionary monetary policy, such as interest rate cuts or additional asset purchases.
09.21 Irish finance minister Michael Noonan believes the 2012 8.6pc deficit target is "easily realisable".
09.11 German Constitutional Court says government did not inform Parliament sufficiently about configuration of ESM. Upholds lawsuit against ESM. Euro falls to $1.2585.
09.03 Meeting between New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras and Democratic Left chief Fotis Kouvelis has ended.
Kouvelis says the country needs a government and renegotiation on certain aspects of [bailout] memorandum, "we have conditions". He adds that a government is possible if there is an agreement on policy platform and "trustworthiness of personalities". Process of forming government "moving forward at a pace". Will would meet Samaras again later today.
Alex Spillius, the Telegraph's Greece correspondent, said:
But many in his own party don?t want to join on any terms. They fear that associating themselves with the bailout could lead to electoral oblivion next time, as it did for L.A.O.S, a right-wing Orthodox party that supported the international deal in March and now has precisely zero seats.
Evangelos Venizelos, PASOK leader: "Our premise remains that the country should get a government with a specific programme, both for the internal affairs but also for the political renegotiation of the memorandum.
"We are proposing a framework. I have raised the issue of the reliability of individuals. I expect very specific answers from Mr Samaras. The process must be speeded up. The country must have a government soon. In the next few hours, it could be possible to move ahead if there is convergence on these points."
08.50 Nick Malkoutzis, deputy editor of Greek newspaper Kathimerini:
08.42 Peter Spiegel from the FT is at the G20 Summit:
08.26 Cyprus' Finance Minister Vassos Shiarly has said financing to recapitalise the country's banks is a priority, and the issue is urgent.
Options still open on funding, including bilateral loan or help from EFSF.
08.23 In a new blog today, the BBC's Robert Peston looks at the possibility of British banks being downgraded and Bank of England support:
First, some time in the coming days - and the banks think probably this week - Moody's will announce downgrades of most of them. For the European banks, Moody's and the other credit rating agencies are seen as grim reapers, going from country to country pronouncing in more-or-less all of them that the banks are less strong than they once were.
Bankers concede to me that - in these more anxious times - they can't be certain that the downgrades will have zero effect on their ability to borrow. Which gives a clue as to why the Bank of England has launched the insurance scheme of the ECTR at this juncture and in a bit of a hurry.
08.20 New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras is meeting Democratic Left chief Fotis Kouvelis now.
Samaras has made it clear that he will seek a renegotiation of the second memorandum of understanding with the EU and IMF. The devil will be in the details, but speaking late last night after meetings on forming a coalition he suggested the revisions would not be minor.
He said: "We will simultaneously have to make some necessary amendments to the bailout agreement, in order to relieve the people of crippling unemployment and huge hardships."
08.19 Fitch has released a statement on the Bank of England's plan to start offering cheap cash loans to banks next week as part of a package of measures to ease the flow of credit to the economy.
A Bank of England liquidity facility should strengthen confidence in the UK banking sector by providing a more explicit promise of short-term liquidity support during any future market-wide shortage. The impact of a separate "funding-for-lending" plan from the government and the BoE will depend on the final details, but is likely to be broadly neutral for banks if they pass on lower funding costs to their borrowers.
Under the liquidity plan, the BoE will activate the extended collateral term repo facility that it first announced in December. By offering to lend against a wide range of collateral, we believe the BoE is sending a clear signal that it is ready to continue to offer large-scale support if a further deterioration of the eurozone crisis were to disrupt liquidity. The facility is broadly similar to the SLS facility, now repaid, offered during the 2008-2009 market turbulence.
The details of the "funding-for-lending" programme are yet to be decided, but it will provide funding to banks over several years at rates below current market ones, passing on the UK sovereign's lower cost of funds to banks. While lower funding costs would normally help boost bank margins, the package is intended as a stimulus for the wider economy and we therefore expect it to be structured to try to ensure banks pass on the lower costs to customers.
Such a programme could help increase lending to small and medium-sized enterprises that have previously baulked at the current cost of borrowing, but would be broadly neutral for the banks themselves. Both plans were announced by BoE governor Mervyn King and chancellor of the exchequer George Osborne last week.
07.52 All eyes will be on Greece today. Can New Democracy, which won Sunday's election, form a coalition? The entire world seems to be urging them to do it as soon as possible, including David Cameron: "I think a delay could be very dangerous."
In his daily email, the Telegraph's Head of Business, Damian Reece, said:
The G20 in Mexico is also continuing today. UK Chancellor George Osborne will be giving a briefing at 3pm (UK time), followed by the summit's communique and a press conference with IMF chief Christine Lagarde at 11.30pm (Uk time).
07.50 France's business confidence indicator has fallen to 92 in June from 93 in May.
07.40 The Bank of Spain asked the four auditors examining the balance sheets of Spanish lenders to delay their reports to conduct a more thorough study.
The auditors? reports on Spain?s 14 main banking groups will now be published in September instead of by July 31.
This is very bad news, just adds to nervousness over country's financial health.
07.38 Foreign ownership of Japanese debt jumped to record 76 trillion yen (?614bn) in 2011.
07.26 Spanish 10-year bond yields have fallen slightly this morning to just above 7pc, Italy's just above 6pc.
ING and BNP both believe that the ECB will buy sovereign bonds again if Spain hits 7.5pc.
07.20 Spanish police are now patrolling farmland after the economic crisis saw a spike in people stealing crops.
In villages near farming areas, several thousand paramilitary Civil Guards, regional and local police are even setting up checkpoints to sniff out stolen fruit or farming equipment such as copper wire used in irrigation systems. The Civil Guard says sometimes its officers mount "cage operations" - sealing off whole villages to check cars and trucks.
"This has emerged because of social alarm. Because of the crisis, crime is up," said the local police chief Ernesto Banos. "And when cherry season comes around, people say, 'what now, cherries? OK, let's go get them."
Japan's Nikkei index has fallen 0.8pc, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index has lost 0.5pc and South Korea's Kospi is 0.1pc down.
06.43 The Seychelles has postponed the planned introduction of VAT on July 15 because of the global economic crisis, President James Michel has said.
06.40 Spain is likely to pay record prices to borrow at debt auctions today.
The yield on Spanish 10-year bonds hit a fresh high of above 7pc on Monday as initial relief over the victory of pro-bailout parties in Greece gave way to ongoing fears of deeper problems facing the bloc.
Spain's Treasury will issue between ?2bn and ?3bn of 12- and 18-month debt today.
06.34 IMF chief Christine Lagarde has revealed that member states have promised a total of $456bn for its new crisis fund, $26bn more than a target set in April. The UK has pledged $15bn.
China will contribute $43bn, state news agency Xinhua confirmed on Tuesday morning. Lagarde said:
Countries large and small have rallied to our call for action, and more may join. I salute them and their commitment to multilateralism. As a result, total pledges have risen to $456bn, almost doubling our lending capacity.
06.30 While Jeremy Warner writes that we shouldn't expect any solutions from the international junketing in Mexico:
Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, has welcomed the outcome of the Greek election, but it must have been through gritted teeth. In fact, New Democracy's narrow victory is the worst possible outcome for Berlin. What a relief that Greece has voted to remain in the euro, German policymakers profess in public. Not, they mutter as an aside.
06.20 7,300 miles away in Athens, things aren't much better. Louise Armitstead and Alex Spillius report that Greece could be knocking on Brussels' door for a third bail-out as soon as a government is formed:
Dimitrios Tsmocos, a senior economic adviser, said Mr Samaras intends to "honour Greece's contractual obligations but will actively and aggressively renegotiate the memorandum". Another senior aide warned of a "social explosion" in Greece if the bail-outs terms were not relaxed.
Athens has to reduce its budget deficit to below 3pc of GDP by 2014 and find a further ?11bn in public spending cuts from 2014 to 2016. But spiralling economic woes have already driven Greece off course.
However, experts warned Greece will need another cash injection if the terms are relaxed. Joerg Asmussen, executive board member of the European Central Bank, said: "If one is pressing to shift fiscal targets, one should be so honest to also say that as long as a country is running a primary deficit, extending the fiscal targets will automatically mean that there will be an additional external financing need.
06.15 The leaders of the world's 20 most powerful economies may have been soaking up the sun in Mexico yesterday, but the focus remained 6,000 miles away in Madrid, as Spain pleaded for the European Central Bank to step in and stop the country's economy from spiralling out of control. Ambrose Evans-Pritchard reports:
Bank of America said Spain may need a second rescue to tide it through the next three years, pushing the total loan package towards ?450bn ? a sum that would test the EU bail-out machinery and cause serious knock-on effects for Italy. A draft communique from the summit of G20 leaders in Mexico said Europe will take "all necessary measures" to hold the eurozone together and break the "feedback loop" between sovereign states and banks.
A separate text for next week's EU summit vowed to "mobilise all levers and instruments", though details were thin. Italy said it would push for a "semi-automatic mechanism" ? probably involving the ECB ? to cap the bond yields of states in trouble.

Arlington
Coach: Lloyd Meyer (58th year)
Last year: 24-11 (third in Cook County)
Players: Alec Backes (P), Ken Bartelt (C), Jimmy Barton (1B), Joe Brandt (IF), John Burkiewicz (OF), Tommy Flahaven (2B-SS), Brad Gerdes (SS), Grant Gerdes (2B), Rich Gorski (P-IF), Dan Hendricks (1B), Matt Hendricks (P-IF), Bobby Napoleon (P), Pat Nix (P), Jimmy Pinakidis (OF), Erik Stoltzner (OF), Bobby Suchecki (C), Andrew Van Wazer (P-C-3B), Mickey Wazorick (P)
Outlook: If Arlington?s first two wins are an indicator, 3-2 over Wheaton and 2-1 over Elk Grove, then the pitching will be tough to beat. ?We base it all on pitching and defense and hopefully we can scratch out a run or two with the new bats,? Meyer said. ?We have enough pitching to hold people in.? The addition of the Illinois-bound Gorski, who was an all-area standout at Streamwood and has residency in Arlington?s boundaries, is a big boost along with Rollins-bound Matt Hendricks and Van Wazer (1-0 in 6 appearances with the University of Chicago). ?He?s a good pitcher who I know can win,? Meyer said. ?We have three really top-notch pitchers who can hold people in.? There is also solid high school pitching experience with Napoleon, Nix and Wazorick as one of the keys will be putting too much of a workload on Van Wazer as the versatile former BG star will also do most of the catching. Gorski and Hendricks will also be key parts of the infield defense with Brad Gerdes and Meyer likes what he?s seen from Barton at the plate. Pinakidis and Stoltzner lead the way in the outfield. ?We have a chance to be good but I don?t know about our offense,? Meyer said. ?We have to learn how to hit and learn how to make contact. We have to scratch out 1-2-3 runs and keep winning 3-2 because that?s what state and national champions are made of. I like the makeup of this team.?
Barrington
Coach: Pat Wire (fourth year)
Last year: 27-13 (third in Second Division)
Players: Chris Coco (IF), Jacob Coon (C-1B-3B), Justin Dragosz (1B-OF), Greg Gerrard (P), Daniel Kubiuk (SS-P), Jack Lenz (C), Ryan Lidge (C), Scott Nelson (OF-P), John Peterson (C), Mitchell Pfeiffer (OF), Macray Poidomani (OF), Max Redpath (P-1B-3B), Jon Rogers (P), Nick Spagnola (3B), Wyatt Trautwein (P), Frank Waliczek (P)
Outlook: An experienced and talented group knows it will be in the Second Division tournament as the host but Barrington will try to continue showing under Wire it?s a postseason team to be reckoned with. ?The hardest part is this group hasn?t been together yet as a nucleus,? Wire said. ?We?ve started slow the last three years but I?m more interested in making sure we find out where we want certain players. It?s probably one of the stronger teams I?ve seen on paper, but you know how paper is.? The pitching shapes up as a strength again with the return of Gerrard from college to give Wire a trio of potential aces with Waliczek and Rogers while Trautwein, Redpath and Nelson also have the capability to pitch in big games. They?ll be throwing to one of the area?s top catchers in Lidge, who just finished an all-area junior year. Poidomani, Dragosz and Spagnola also return and Coco and Kubiuk will help anchor the middle infield. There is also a nice infusion of younger talent which should lead to another run at a state tournament berth. ?I feel confident with our team and we?ll come together once we tread water in the beginning,? Wire said. ?We need some of the younger guys to step up for us.?
Elk Grove
Coach: Brian Mucha (seventh year)
Last year: 21-15 (Cook County champions)
Players: Colin Bethran (OF), Matt Brancato (3B), Tom Byrne (SS), Cosimo Cannella (1B), Dave Geller (2B), Jordan Grubb (OF), Dan Guido (P), Jeremy Hall (C), Dan Hayes (P), Kerry Hickerson (1B), Kevin Hilliard (OF), Roger Lane (1B-OF), Chris Myjak (P-3B), Patrick O?Malley (2B), Kyle Rinehart (P-OF), Kevin Robinson (C), Robert Romano (P), Art Sutter (P), Paul Warble (P)
Outlook: The potential for a repeat Cook County title and third in four years is there if everything goes right on the mound. The hard-throwing Romano, who was 2-0 with a save in 14 games for Illinois Wesleyan, threw 5 strong innings in a 5-2 win over Northbrook but experienced some elbow tightness. Mucha said Warble will need time to get stretched out after redshirting at Oakton College. ?We have a deep staff and I feel like we?re pretty strong, but I?m worried about Romano and Warble right now,? said Mucha, whose team lost its two state tourney games last year. ?We may take some lumps early but our ultimate goal is to start peaking by Moline (tournament in early July).? Sutter was 3-4 in 54 innings at Elgin Community College, Hayes pitched for Concordia?s JV team and Myjak and Guido have proven high school success. Another good sign for the Red Sox was the recent addition of the North Central-bound Brancato, the Daily Herald All-Area captain who led Schaumburg?s run to the Class 4A supersectional that included Byrne, Bethran, Grubb, Hall and Rinehart. ?The Schaumburg kids are just great kids,? Mucha said. ?They play the game the right way and hopefully we can build off their success.? Lane played at Robert Morris and returns with Geller and Hilliard, Hickerson and Cannella should provide some pop at 1B and Robinson is a solid defensive catcher who played at Harper College.
Mount Prospect
Coach: Tom Krumsee (fourth year)
Last year: 9-18
Players: Jeremy Berger (P-2B), Richard Carusiello (P-3B), Jordan Fedro (P-1B), Andrew Glowacki (P-SS-2B), Tyler Glowacki (SS-2B-P), Trevor Haas (OF-P), Tyler Klicka (C-OF), Josh Koutnik (1B), Dan Larson (OF), Jake LoGuidice (1B-P), Brad Moore (P-OF), Nick Nolan (OF), Phil Papaioannu (C), Niko Poulos (P-OF), Sean Reszotko (3B), Jack Warner (SS-2B), Michael Withey (P), Mark Witzke (P)
Outlook: More players, more experience and more talent should equate to more success for Mount Prospect. ?I feel really confident we?ll be very competitive this year,? Krumsee said. ?But the reality is this area has so many good players it will still be a challenge and we?ll have to play good baseball to win.? But the Valparaiso-bound Haas, who will play primarily outfield, is an all-area pick who leads a group of players who were part of an MSL champion at Hersey in Koutnik, Moore, Nolan, Reszotko, Poulos and Witzke. Berger, an all-area pitcher at Buffalo Grove, is part of a staff that includes Moore, LoGuidice, Withey and the Glowackis. Krumsee said how much Fedro, Carusiello and Poulos pitch will depend on their schedule with their high school summer teams. ?Most of them pitched in the spring and they know what they?re doing,? Krumsee said. ?No matter what it always comes down to pitching.? Papaioannou back behind the plate after an all-conference season at Maine East. ?He?s come so far from last year,? Krumsee said. ?He?s improved, he?s gotten bigger and he?s more mature.? The Glowackis also provide solid play up the middle and Moore figures to play a big part on the mound and in the outfield. ?They all seem to be really good kids and we don?t have a bad apple among them,? Krumsee said.
Palatine
Coach: Jeff Ryder (10th year)
Last year: 21-7 (second in Cook County)
Players: Jack Andersen (P-3B), Gunnar Anderson (P), Connor Bieda (C), Sam Beutler (OF), Lee Breitzman (P-1B), Keith Browning (OF-P), Brad Demmon (2B-SS-OF), Shane Devero (OF), Keith Giagnorio (OF-P), Danny Haduch (2B-SS-P), Clint Herdegen (C), John Jetel (P), Trent Rehusch (P-3B), Brian Wilhite (SS), Randall Wilt (3B)
Outlook: Ryder said having about 10 potential pitchers ?is fantastic,? especially with the all-area duo of Andersen and Breitzman from Mid-Suburban West champion Fremd and Rehusch, who was at Harper College this spring, leading the way for a program which has established itself as an annual contender for the Cook County crown. The Blue Jays also expect to be solid up the middle with Wilhite, who started at SS for St. Viator, and Haduch at 2B and ready to go after an injury-plagued season at Fremd. Ryder also likes the defense from Bieda behind the plate and Browning in center field and is excited about the addition of Beutler, who came up to Fremd?s varsity from the sophomores late this spring and homered in the MSL title game. ?We have some speed and he biggest thing is we?re athletic,? Ryder said. ?Our defense and pitching should be good. It?s a fun and good group of kids and we?ll see what we can do. For us it?s about being ready for that (County) tournament again.?
Notes
One of Mount Prospect?s new assistant coaches is former Schaumburg star Jordan Wolf, who also played at Xavier and in the minor league system of the Baltimore Orioles. ?When I told them he was drafted it?s amazing how much more the kids listened to him,? said Prospect coach Tom Krumsee. ?Here?s a kid who is 27 and has been there and it makes a big difference.?
