Will Saturday's 'supermoon' destroy the Earth?
No, it won't. You people really need to learn to calm down.?
Astronomers call it perigee-syzygy; the rest of us call it "supermoon." Either way, the alignment of the sun and moon will coincide with the moon's closest approach to Earth on Saturday (May 5), resulting in the biggest full moon of the year. But don't worry, it won't break Earth.
Skip to next paragraphSaturday's supermoon will be especially super. Richard Nolle, the astrologer who coined the term "supermoon," defined it as a full moon that occurs within 12 hours of lunar perigee, or the point in the moon's slightly non-circular monthly orbit when it swings closest to our planet. On Saturday, the timing of the two events will be almost perfect: the moon will reach its perigee distance of 221,802 miles (356,955 kilometers) ? the closest lunar perigee of 2012, in fact ? at 11:34 p.m. Eastern Time, and it will fall in line with the sun (thereby becoming full) just one minute later.
Thus, our satellite will loom even larger than the?supermoon of March 19, 2011, when perigee and full moon fell 50 minutes apart. Nonetheless, just as last year's supermoon passed by without triggering any of the earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and chaos that were predicted by some corners of the Internet, this year's event will almost certainly be similarly tame. Seismologists have found no evidence to believe that supermoons heighten seismic activity ? at least not over and above the effects of run-of-the-mill moons.
Under normal conditions, the moon is close enough to Earth to make its weighty presence felt:?It causes the ebb and flow of the ocean tides.?The moon's gravity can even cause small but measureable ebbs and flows in the continents, called "land tides" or "solid Earth tides," too. The tides are greatest during full and new moons, when the sun and moon are aligned either on the opposite or same sides of the Earth. [Photos: Mysterious Objects Spotted on the Moon]
According to John Vidale, a seismologist at the University of Washington in Seattle and director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, particularly dramatic land and ocean tides do occasionally trigger earthquakes. "Both the moon and sun do stress the Earth a tiny bit, and when we look hard we can see a very small increase in tectonic activity when they're aligned," Vidale told?Life's Little Mysteries?during the furor surrounding last year's supermoon.

Clean Cuisine's Healing Anti-Inflammatory Diet | Clean Cuisine and ...
In 2005 my wife, Ivy Larson, and I wrote the Gold Coast Cure, which was basically an anti-inflammatory diet created specifically for helping people with inflammatory diseases such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, asthma, allergies, heart disease, etc. It was also a diet that helped my wife regain her health. You can read all about Ivy?s story HERE and how her diagnosis with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 1998 at the age of 22 prompted me to research an anti-inflammatory diet.
Ivy?s MS has been in remission for almost 15 years now (knock on wood!) I knock on wood because I know MS is not ?curable? with an anti-inflammatory diet or even medication?but in many cases the symptoms of MS and many other inflammatory diseases can be controlled.
My whole family, including my 11-year old son, now follows the same healing and anti-inflammatory diet Ivy follows because even though the rest of us don?t have MS or any other inflammatory disease I strongly believe an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of ?cure?. And besides, I can also happily report that the anti-inflammatory diet has helped me lose ? and keep off ? the post-college pounds that had crept up in med school as well as lower my blood pressure.
Ivy and I have continued to study nutrition for over a decade and since writing our Gold Coast Cure we have modified and updated our anti-inflammatory diet to be even more anti-inflammatory than before. Our Clean Cuisine website offers ?super? anti-inflammatory recipes and a?snapshot into how our family follows an anti-inflammatory lifestyle every day.
How Can a Clean Cuisine Anti-Inflammatory Diet Help You?
Ok, so maybe you don?t have MS, high blood pressure or any pounds to lose, but an anti-inflammatory diet can still help you. Many of the chronic, degenerative diseases people suffer with in our modern world have chronic inflammation as the common thread. Seemingly unrelated conditions that affect millions of Americans including Crohn?s disease, heart disease, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, vascular dementia, multiple sclerosis, etc., all have one common denominator: inflammation. Specifically, in all of these conditions the body overproduces a signaling protein called interleukin-1 (IL-1).
Inflammatory conditions have reached epidemic proportion and they are a big boon for the pharmaceutical industry. Current mainstream medical treatments for blocking inflammation include steroid drugs, aspirin, ibuprofen, and other NSAID?s. But in many cases these medications, especially the steroids, are like taking a sledgehammer to your foot just in order to kill a red ant; the smashed foot usually ends up being far more of a problem than the red ant bite would have been.
The point is all anti-inflammatory prescription medications can have very serious side effects, and sometimes the side effects (the smashed foot) can leave you worse off than before.
The good news is you can modify your body?s inflammatory response and reduce the chronic low grade inflammation that exacerbates inflammatory conditions simply by changing the foods you eat.? This is because some foods are pro-inflammatory and other foods are anti-inflammatory. For example, omega-3 fish oil happens to have extraordinary anti-inflammatory properties. In fact, omega 3?s can lower your IL-1 levels by as much as 50 percent, a degree of suppression similar to that caused by some steroid drugs. (1) Even just increasing fiber intake by eating more plant foods lowers inflammation and C-reactive protein levels (2).
Food, as I have learned, is very powerful medicine.
Being Overweight Adds Fuel to the Inflammatory Fire
Chronic low-grade inflammation isn?t the only mushrooming epidemic. Approximately 64 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. Not only does being overweight exacerbate an existing inflammatory disease, but fat cells play a major role in the creation of the inflammatory molecules that directly contribute to inflammatory disease.
But again, there?s good news. You can absolutely lose weight by adopting an anti-inflammatory diet. In fact, any food that is anti-inflammatory will promote weight loss.
Clean Cuisine?s 7 Anti-Inflammatory Diet Tips
Adopting an anti-inflammatory diet can seem daunting but following these 7 simple anti-inflammatory diet tips can set you well on your way to reducing inflammation, healing your body and shedding unwanted (pro-inflammatory) pounds too. Reducing inflammation can?also help significantly boost energy levels even help?you look better, age slower and have fewer wrinkles, an anti-inflammatory ?perk? my female patients always seem especially excited about.

?
I acknowledge that radically changing your diet can be overwhelming. My advice is to start slow. Make one or two of the changes recommended above and once those change become second nature then make some additional changes.
It is far better to make changes that will be permanent than to make a quick-fix change, because when it comes to controlling inflammation with an anti-inflammatory diet the changes absolutely must be consistent. You can and you will see results following an anti-inflammatory diet, but only if you are consistent.

94% The Secret World of Arrietty
All Critics (115) | Top Critics (25) | Fresh (108) | Rotten (7)
As pretty as it is, this Secret World is too Earthbound by far.
The Secret World of Arrietty is a marvelously captivating animated feature about very tiny people and the full-scale world they inhabit.
Yonebayashi gives Arrietty an excellent sense of balance, with the adventure aspects of the story, which feel legitimately dangerous providing well-paced contrast the film's more placid moments.
It's an enjoyable and attractive-looking film, but a little of that "Speed Racer" energy wouldn't have been such a bad thing.
The visual details are inventive, and the animation - particularly the colors - is lovely.
"The Secret World of Arrietty'' is a feast for the eyes that will engage the entire family.
There's a gentle movie from Japan that's going to seem familiar to a lot of fans of the series of books about 'The Borrowers.'
Like motion picture Yoga--quietly cathartic and just the thing to raise your kids on.
It certainly belongs in the second rank of Ghibli fantasies. But give it a chance.
Most will be caught up in its beautiful spell, immersed in great storytelling at its finest.
The soft-focus animation has an impressionistic quality, as if a gentle breeze had wafted across a Monet canvas.
This smart, winsome fairy tale is not quite Hiyao Miyazaki, but it still might be the best animated film that (some few) will see all year.
Another Studio Ghibli wonder, as heartbreaking for its devotion to craft, artistry and intelligent storytelling (for viewers of all ages) as for its themes of inevitable exile and impossible love.
There's a gentle movie from Japan that's going to seem familiar to a lot of fans of the series of books about 'The Borrowers.'
...yet another jewel in the crown of Studio Ghibli.
...creates a sense of wide-eyed wonder and discovery as we experience the awe-inspiring mysteries of an ordinary house as seen from the four-inch borrower's point of view.
The animation, a gorgeous blend of bewitching watercolored backgrounds and poignantly rendered characters, is, as ever, beyond reproach.
What is most effective is the way the sense of peaceful shelter and retreat in the country setting contrasts with the precariousness of the situations faced by Shawn and Arrietty.
It's hard to imagine this scenario playing out with more delicacy and care than animator-turned-director Yonebayashi Hiromasa brings to bear.
Arrietty has an elegiac mood, like a more wan and sedate Toy Story.
Gently enchanting, an extraordinary adventure
There may not be a frenzy of action and fast cuts but each scene has meticulous details about how the borrowers live, how they make use of the things in their environment to survive.
Tiny people who live in the walls of a rural home are put at risk when they are discovered by the humans residing there. Studio Ghibli offers a soothing animated version of the classic children's novels.
the basic elements of loneliness, friendship, and the fragility of life are intact, along with that ineffable sense of wonder, melancholy, and magic
By being less bizarre than SPIRITED AWAY and having more of a human center to the film, THE SECRET WORLD OF ARRIETTY is one of Studio Ghibli's best efforts to date.
